The best places in North Carolina

With a violent crime rate of 746 per 100,000 people, Charlotte is considered one of the most unsafe cities in America. This statistic translates to a 1 in 134 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime in Charlotte, underscoring the need for increased safety measures and community engagement to improve the city's security. In Charlotte, the crime rate stands at 4121 per 100,000 residents, surpassing the national average by 77.32%. This places the city among those with some of the highest total crime rates nationwide.

On Tuesday Gov. Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags to half-staff until Friday in honor of the fallen officers. "He said there's a man shooting over there," the neighbor told WCNC Charlotte's Jesse Pierre. "Man we never had nothing like this before. Never, I've been over here for 27 years. It's wild, man." WCNC Charlotte spoke with a neighbor in the area who said he received a phone call from his neighbor explaining there was a shooting in the area.

Violent crime in Charlotte was down in 2022, even as overall crimes were up, CMPD reports

Jennings said investigators are still piecing together a timeline and he wouldn't rule out the possibility that someone else also fired shots. For the most up-to-date information from Wednesday morning’s report, download the free WBTV news app. CMPD recently launched operation “SCARLET” which has yielded 150 vehicles recovered, 91 firearms seized and 85 completed search warrants this year.

As officers approached the suspect, the man opened fire, striking multiple officers. As officers returned fire, more shots struck additional officers. Of those, eight cases are being reviewed by the district attorney and may be removed from the count. CMPD touted its homicide unit's 80% solve rate over the last five years, claiming that number is significantly higher than the national average of 52%. That same month, three officers in Baton Rouge, La., were killed, and three others were wounded in what the authorities described as an “ambush.” The gunman was killed during a shootout.

Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims. "At one point, there was probably 10 or 15 police or marshals in our back yard, some in our bedrooms," Wilson said. "I opened the doors and just let them come through the house. It’s one of those situations where you just black out – you go into fight or flight mode." According to Jennings, a total of 12 Charlotte officers fired weapons, and all have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard policy in officer-involved shootings. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police recovered 100 shell casings, an AR-15 rifle and a .40-caliber handgun from the home, according to Jennings.

Charlotte Crime Rates

Despite a steady decline in murder rates in the United States since 1990, recent years have witnessed an unfortunate uptick. Charlotte stands out with one of the nation's highest murder rates, surpassing other cities that reported crime. In Charlotte, there were a total of 108 murders, translating to 11 murders per 100,000 people, underscoring the pressing need for continued efforts to address and reduce severe violent crime in the area. CMPD saw a 10% increase in the number of guns seized last year, taking 3,432 guns off Charlotte's streets. Robberies were down 8%, arsons were flat and aggravated assaults saw a 3% increase from 2022. That includes a 7% increase in the number of shootings, with CMPD reporting 4,261 shootings in 2023.

Crime is down in Charlotte so far this year, police say

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson and Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead offered their condolences and law enforcement resources to the U.S. Marshal Services, the NC Department of Correction and city leaders in Charlotte. In addition to calling on lawmakers to provide more funding for law enforcement, he called on members of congress to pass a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. According the CMPD, Hughes used an assault-style weapon when he shot at officers. Property crime has risen 1%, and violent crime incidents are up 2%. Homicides and robberies are also down 5% each compared to the same time period in 2021.

Year Over Year Crime In Charlotte (per 100,000 people)

Chase White was shot in Tucson, Arizona, by a man wanted for stalking local law enforcement officers, the agency said. In all, eight law enforcement officials were shot, including two correction officers who were killed and a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who was critically wounded and later died. The department touted Operation Heartbeat, one of its newer initiatives designed to reduce violent crime.

The CMPD has held a giveaway for steering wheel “club” anti-theft devices for Kia and Hyundai vehicles with another giveaway event scheduled for April 29th. CMPD’s Public Affairs Office has put out materials on the Kia/Hyundai Challenge with prevention tips to educate vehicle owners. Jennings says one of the concerning trends is an increase in guns stolen from vehicles. "A 5% decrease in violent crime is encouraging, but we will continue to remain laser-focused on deterring these serious offenses in 2023,"  said Jennings.

Eight law officers were shot on Monday, four fatally, as a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force tried to serve a warrant in Charlotte, N.C., the police said, in one of the deadliest days for law enforcement in recent years. U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis made a statement, as well, saying, "An attack in Charlotte on our brave law enforcement officers who swore an oath to protect and serve us all. Susan and I are praying for everyone’s safety." The department reports 722 vehicles have been stolen so far in 2022, which is an 11% increase from Q1 last year. The largest contributor to the rise in overall crime incidents in 2023 has been auto thefts.

Zoning Translation Charlotte Unified Development OrdinanceCharlotte Unified Development Ordinance

charlotte zoning ordinance

Most tenant-landlord relationships are perfectly stable and mutually beneficial when our job is done right, but inevitably, the courtroom has always been the final step in resolving an irreconcilable dispute. The male suspect exited the residence on Galway Drive with a firearm. Law enforcement officers perceived an imminent deadly threat and fired their service weapons striking the suspect in the front yard of the residence.

Districts not translating with udo

The zoning regulations in the UDO are crafted to be more easily understood. The UDO relies less on written text, and more on graphics and illustrations, to convey the various development standards to the casual user. The subdivision, streets, and other infrastructure articles (Articles 29-34) provide regulations for development activities within the City and its Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ).

Has my zoning changed?

Research has shown that supporting a greater mix of housing types is key to providing more opportunities for affordable housing. The OAC is a small group with interests and experience in community organization, real estate and development, and advocacy in the Charlotte area with a balance of perspectives. To be effective, the committee’s membership is limited to no more than 40 members, all of whom are appointed by the Planning Director. We’ve developed a series of handouts summarizing zoning districts in the UDO. If you knew your zoning under the old ordinance, you may see a new name today.

How does the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) address Affordable Housing?

The Stormwater Administrator is responsible for carrying out the powers and duties outlined in these articles. Additionally, the Stormwater Administrator must provide information and recommendations relative to variances and respond to appeals from the UDO Board of Adjustment. Once you’ve chosen a legal team, it’s time to start gathering whatever evidence you have for the case. While every case is different, the best way to prepare for a legal dispute is to ensure strict document and filing protocols with your property management team to make sure everything is recorded and available as evidence. The vision and guiding principles of the UDO support affordable housing by encouraging a range of housing choices. In short, this includes housing that meet the needs of people with different incomes, ages, physical abilities and lifestyles.

Texting is an informal platform where correspondence could easily be missed and therefore interpreted as ignored. Property managers and owners should always have tenants use portals to submit repair requests through official channels. Eviction mills can process an uncontested case, sure, but if it is contested, you’ll want an experienced team that can handle the pressure of litigation. As is standard procedure with any officer involved shooting, the CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation. UDO University offered a series of virtual training opportunities to assist in learning about the UDO and to ask questions of subject matter experts.

What is the purpose and role of the Ordinance Advisory Committee?

Specific changes recommended for this draft are highlighted in green.

Most zoning districts changed on June 1, 2023 as Charlotte’s new development ordinance updated the City’s zoning map. The Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) that City Council approved last August included a transition or “translation” of old zoning districts to the new zoning districts of the unified ordinance. Use this map to see if a new zoning district applies to your property. The only zoning that did not change on June 1 were conditional, optional, and exception zoning districts that were previously rezoned with specific rules for development. Charlotte’s original zoning ordinance (before the UDO) was not always in alignment with the community’s vision for how development should occur, nor did it always reflect best practices for zoning regulations. The original zoning ordinance was often difficult to navigate and confusing for the occasional user.

Neighborhood 1 zoning districts allow duplexes and triplexes

Virtual session presentations and playbacks are now available at the link below. Recommended substantive changes to the Public Hearing Draft have been summarized in the matrix linked here. This summary does not include non-substantive changes such as grammatical corrections, spelling corrections, or scrivener’s errors, etc. The text of the Public Hearing Draft with recommended changes is available for review online at the CharlotteUDO.org website.

Numerous changes were made to the UDO between the release of the first draft in October 2021 and adoption in August 2022. Changes were based on feedback obtained from the community, City and County staff, the UDO Advisory Committee (OAC), Planning Commission, County Commission, and City Council. All the public comments submitted through the comment portal on both drafts were recorded and are available on the CharlotteUDO.org website. Staff worked to respond to and reconcile all comments and recommended changes based on the feedback received, where appropriate.

Additionally, it outlines the rules of construction, abbreviations, and definitions that are used throughout the UDO. The information provided here is not legal advice and does not purport to be a substitute for advice of counsel on any specific matter. For legal advice, you should consult with an attorney concerning your specific situation.

In addition, the UDO includes several other methods to achieve greater affordability including incentives, removing regulatory barriers, and providing higher density housing opportunities. The UDO was developed by staff from the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, with feedback on concepts from the Ordinance Advisory Committee (OAC), community feedback, and consultant support from Camiros, Ltd. That’s why it’s essential to make an extra effort to keep yourself informed. One of the best ways to do that is to seek out educational seminars by the same legal experts that would best represent you in court. In a perfect world, there would be no text messaging with tenants, and all communication would be done through email correspondence or letters.

What I Like About the Charlotte Tilbury Fragrance Collection of Emotions

How something smells to me will more than likely smell different to you. While my favorite scents were Joyphoria and Magic Energy, my least favorites might end up being your favorites. Head this way for the best jade rollers, over here for the best gua-sha and in this direction for our review of the best LED face masks. Known for her ability to transform dull, tired complexions into glowing, plump ones with her backstage tricks, the new Cryo-Recovery Mask, £49, delivers Charlotte’s signature Tilbury skin at home... And having tried it out for ourselves, we'd advise you add it to your shopping cart pronto. But what if we told you there’s been a new innovation that only amplifies the already impressive results of cryotherapy?

GODDESS SKIN CLAY MASK75 ML

Beauty enthusiasts can test out Charlotte Tilbury’s 10 iconic looks via the Magic Mirror powered by Makeup A.I. (Makeup Artistry Intelligence), a game-changing device that gives customers a virtual makeover! Not only that but it will also provide customers with a unique description of their skincare and makeup needs. This unique technology application brings together Charlotte’s expert makeup artistry techniques combined with the latest digital innovation. The Magic Mirror will allow everyone to experience a virtual one-on-one consultation with the world’s number one makeup artist. There's no denying that at $54, the mask is expensive, but a huge plus for me is that it's reuseable.

About this store

I met with the brand in Los Angeles a few months ago, and what I learned certainly grabbed my attention. Jade Marie, Chloe Morello, Jackie Aina, Sistine Stallone and Sophie Stallone were some other notable guests who attended the event. In addition editors from the LA Times, Forbes, Popsugar and Refinery29 were also in attendance. Charlotte is now sharing the beauty DNA and secrets of supermodels, stars and screen sirens, and unveiling them to the world! Charlotte Tilbury is thrilled to announce the launch of her first-ever beauty wonderland flagship store at The Grove in Los Angeles that opened June 26th. The new Cryo-Recovery Mask is a reusable, silicone mask that is embedded with cooling gel bead pockets along the forehead and cheeks and under the chin.

In particular the Beach Stick in Ibiza shade was inspired the ethereal light of the island itself. Simply put it in the freezer for a minimum of 30 minutes, secure to your face using the velcro straps, and feel the instant cooling effects. The mask is made from silicone so it is extremely comfortable to wear and wash, which is super important. I applied a hydrating serum prior to putting on the mask to make my skin feel ultra moisturized and glowy; perfect for the days when I want to add an extra-special step before doing my makeup. Skincare and beauty lovers share video content of their favourite products and earn “coins” that can be put towards beauty items. You can also buy Agora “Edit” boxes with discounts of up to 85% on beauty items inside.

A dupe is a cheaper option that is very similar to a typically high-end product. You can search for the cheapest dupe of your favourite products that influencers are recommending on social media, too. For example, Aldi’s Lacura range offers budget-friendly luxury skincare products and is well rated by users. The products are only available in Aldi stores and the next health and beauty “special buys” promotion is due to start on 5 May. The Beauty Wonderland at The Grove will allow customers to get expert tips, book pro services with the store's in-house makeup artists and experiment with Charlotte’s iconic makeup range.

I spritz on my wrists, the back of my neck, down my shirt, and in my hair. The first thing I noticed about the products was the packaging. Each bottle is housed in a box that looks similar to a book, and you can open the front flap to reveal the fragrance and a mini story that goes with it. The shape is similar to a potion bottle with a stopper on top. With over 30 years experience, Charlotte Tilbury MBE is the world's number 1 makeup artist and British beauty entrepreneur. Charlotte established Charlotte Tilbury Beauty in 2013, which is now a record-breaking beauty brand that has won over 400 awards.

Whether it’s a hot summer’s day and you want a skin refresh or if the fact you got a few hours less sleep is showing, this little guy will lend a serious helping hand. The mask uses cryotherapy (extreme cold temperatures), which encourages blood flow to the skin's surface and helps to reduce inflammation and puffiness. The pockets full of cooling gel beads that line the inside of the mask help target specific areas of the face including the forehead, the undereyes, and the neck (or under the chin, depending how you wear it).

You may also be able to find products around your home that can become part of your routine. For instance, Superdrug’s Me+, Naturally Radiant, Vitamin E and B. Skincare ranges are a fraction of the cost of many high-end options – a 200ml bottle of toner in the Me+ range is now £8.99 and available on a “buy one, get second half-price” offer to loyalty card holders.

That’s right, there’s a new breakthrough on the cards and it comes from none other than the mother of supermodel skin herself, Charlotte Tilbury. When it comes to cryo, I have to be careful because I have rosacea, so I tried the mask with caution. It didn't flare my rosacea but I did find the gel patches under the eyes were a little big and covered my cheeks more than I'd like; a place where my rosacea tends to be its worst. Despite this, the mask didn't aggravate my rosacea one bit, instead my skin felt soothed and refreshed. Boots and Superdrug also have their own inexpensive skincare lines and frequently run promotions and deals. Renee Rodriguez is a staff writer and social producer for PS.

Beyond that, it also contains cooling metal beads along the brows to target acupressure points, helping to relieve tension, inflammation and puffiness. After using ice as a backstage quick fix for years, Charlotte has created an easy-to-use cryotherapy product that works to depuff, lift skin and boost glow at home. There’s high chance you’re already some what familiar with cryotherapy when it comes to skincare, even if you don’t realise it.

Deck Plans, Activities & Sailings

sunshine carnival cruise

The openness of the space provided optimum participation from passengers and performers, so a lively crowd was always on hand to sing along. The Alchemy Bar on Carnival Sunshine is situated just off the popular Ocean Plaza area, the place to be for trivia games, karaoke and live music. After determining my preferred spirits and flavors, the bartenders always come up with something fantastic. I'm a gin and lavender fan, and our bartender, Tatiana, created an amazing cocktail with gin, lavender, St. Germain, elderflower and lime juice. Open for lunch and dinner, the Bonsai Sushi outpost on Sunshine is smaller than those on newer ships.

Havana Bar is a perfect lunch spot.

Cabins on Carnival Sunshine are generally sized well and offer ample storage space. The color scheme in the standard cabins is a bit dated and the carpets are worn but the layout remains functional. The spa leads to the fitness center, which offers all the latest cardio and weight-training equipment. The fitness center serves as the location for a wide range of instructor-led exercise classes.

Carnival Sunshine Dress Code

Take in great ocean views as you try something authentically Cuban, like café Cubano (that’s Cuban coffee!) or handcrafted Cuban cocktails (think daiquiris, mojitos and more). And this spot definitely doesn’t cool down when the sun goes down, with music and dancing keeping things hot well into the night. Our cabin was an aft (back of the ship) balcony cabin on Deck 5. I'd never stayed in an aft cabin, so I looked forward to having uninterrupted ocean views over the ship's wake. I particularly enjoyed our view as we plied through rough waters during a storm. It was a fantastic reminder of the strength and endurance of cruise ships.

Day 1: Charleston

The Carnival website lists the Piano Bar as a 21-plus venue, but no one challenged the family. The pan-Asian menu features dishes from Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, China and Mongolia served family style. I ordered the shrimp dumplings, sweet and sour shrimp, and the Chinese broccoli.

However, if you prefer a more peaceful experience, you can simply move up to the next deck and head towards the front of the ship. If you don’t want to splurge to eat dinner at these restaurants, you can grab a complimentary lunch at both. Others figure they’ll be exhausted and want something simple that first night. And for many, they save the steakhouse for that special, final night’s dinner.

Don’t count on the internet being as good as home.

You’ll find lots of ways to keep yourself entertained aboard a Carnival Sunshine cruise. There are plenty of activities for the entire family, whether you want to spend a day by the pool, working up a sweat or relaxing in style. When Carnival Destiny became Carnival Sunshine (along with the transformation of all of its sister ships), it was a big deal. It also received a multimillion-dollar refit in 2005, when the ship was nearly ten years old, that upgraded its public spaces.

Alchemy Bar is the perfect spot for pre-dinner drinks.

Carnival Sunshine has been based in Charleston, South Carolina, since 2019, but 2024 will be the last year the ship will depart from the Holy City. It's moving a bit farther up the East Coast to Norfolk, Virginia, beginning in February 2025. TPG's Kristy Tolley accepted a free trip from Carnival Cruise Line to cruise on Carnival Sunshine. The opinions expressed below are entirely hers and weren't subject to review by the line. During drydock 2018 (October 14-21, in Freeport Bahamas) were made regularly planned maintenance works.

Casino

It’s going to be pretty much impossible to avoid the smell of smoke while in the casino, but there are ways to lessen its impact. You can also avoid the buffet at lunchtime by coming to Ocean Plaza for a bite to eat. For example, on embarkation day, they usually set up an Old Fashioned Barbeque station. There, you will find plenty of comfortable loungers and clamshells, completely isolated from the party atmosphere of the Lido deck. At the same time, Cucina features exactly what you’d expect to find in an Italian restaurant (although I’m still puzzled as to why they took the tiramisu and cannoli off the dessert menu). However, keep in mind that smoking is allowed only on the port side (that’s the left side), so if you’re a non-smoker, it’s best to stick to the starboard (right) side.

Day The Bahamas from Charleston, SC

The ubiquitous Park West auction house sells various pieces of art onboard in art auctions that take place in the lobby on Deck 2. The port side of the Casino, which is relatively large, allows for smoking. It features all the usual machines and is connected to the Skybox Sports Bar. The Library Bar is just off the Atrium, which would usually mean it would be competing with the noise from there, but sound-proofed doors give it a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. Self-serve wine dispensers allow you to sample six different wines for a fee.

Balcony staterooms were designed for maximum sea breeze and the most stunning views, so look to a balcony if you're looking to cruise aboard Carnival Sunshine. Any time you're in your room, you're just steps away from your own personal outdoor oasis, featuring the sort of sea view you can also feel. The ship also offers numerous kid-friendly culinary choices, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and 24-hour pizza and soft-serve ice cream, available in the casual poolside Lido Marketplace restaurant. The main dining rooms have a children's menu with daily junior specials each night. Kids can also "dine under the stars" with the youth staff (allowing parents to dine on their own). Eaturing an amazing variety of casual dining spots, each just a few flip-flopped steps from the last, Lido Marketplace always has a special something ready to satisfy your latest craving spectacularly.

BlueIguana Tequila Bar is the onboard spot to chill and enjoy a slushy tequila drink or an ice-cold Mexican cerveza. The menu offers up Mexican favorites, including several brands of tequila and a slew of Mexican brews. There’s a lineup of frozen concoctions, cocktails and margaritas served by the glass or by the pitcher, and even a special Mexican beer cocktail (yes, really). So stay cool and take in the bar’s vacation vibe while you kick back on your cruise – that’s what official bar mascot Blue the Iguana would tell you. You’ll enjoy your meal among Asian prayer rolls and Mongolian-inspired fabrics that infuse northern-country style into this unique culinary experience. JiJi offers a full-service menu featuring a mix of exotic and familiar dishes designed to challenge and delight your senses.

Smoking is permitted in designated areas on Deck 3 (port side, forward) and Deck 10 (starboard side, midship). You can bring one bottle of wine or Champagne (per person) onto the ship at boarding, as well as up to a dozen standard cans or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks such as sodas. At the time of publication, prices started from $374 per person for a four-night Bahamas sailing in an inside cabin (excluding taxes and fees). Throughout 2024, Carnival Sunshine will sail year-round four-, five-, six- and eight-night Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean voyages from Charleston. Depending on the itinerary, stops might include Nassau, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, San Juan and the cruise line's private island, Half Moon Cay. Karaoke events were held in the Ocean Plaza area in between the Alchemy Bar and RedFrog Pub.

And these good looks go beyond the usual — we even offer services like teeth whitening… great for taking those ‘I’m on vacation and I’m looking great! Even if you don’t “know” much about art, of course you can still tell when you like something — who needs a refined palette to know when a piece is good? Carnival leaves snobbish cultural pretensions ashore, and makes art something that everyone can enjoy with a series of events designed to bring great art where it belongs — to the people. Take part in an art-themed battle of the sexes or check out showcases highlighting the best of, say, European artists or world-famous pop artist Peter Max. A picture window gives you views of scenery you won’t find anywhere on land, all from the comfort of your stateroom. Dedicated stateroom attendant, Soft, cozy linens, Plenty of closet and drawer space, In-room safe for valuables, Television Stateroom climate control.

When you take a Carnival Sunshine cruise, you’ll enjoy all your favorite, classic Carnival offerings, from the brand’s well-known restaurants to daily activities and entertainment. Carnival's South Carolina annual cruise shipping volume is approx 220,000 passengers. In Charleston, Carnival Sunshine will replace Carnival Ecstasy (to be relocated to Jacksonville Florida), while the Jacksonville-homeported Carnival Elation will be repositioned to Port Canaveral FL.

The Pub didn't seem to be the hub for activities as I've seen on other vessels, probably because karaoke, live music and trivia games were held just outside the door in the Ocean Plaza. Another perk of an aft cabin was the size of the balcony — a bit larger than regular balconies in other Carnival cabins I've stayed in. Traditional balconies have room for two chairs and a small table. As mentioned earlier, the ship shows signs of wear and tear, which was evident on our balcony.

Additionally, an 18% gratuity is added to bar bills and the cover charge of the Chef's Table. The pacing of our meal was perfect, and we didn't feel rushed through the courses. The cost is $24 (per person) for adults and $6 (per person) for kids aged 11 and under — a great price for a fantastic meal. My husband ordered the "Straight Up" burger with all the fixings, and it was almost on par with others he's eaten on previous cruises. My room had two twin beds pushed together into a queen-size bed that was flanked by bedside lamps and two one-drawer, one-shelf nightstands. The living area had a long sofa that could transform into a bed or the bottom half of bunk beds.

For many people, they don’t have to worry about a ride to the port. Roughly 20 million people live in the greater Los Angeles area that includes Long Beach. So, don’t be worried about your cruising experience being outdated or on the lackluster side when you take a Carnival Sunshine cruise.

Carnival Sunshine Overview

The crew's flexibility and impressive level of service really stood out on this sailing. For example, we went through a storm during our cruise, and rough seas altered the Welcome Aboard production on the first night. Instead of a musical and dance show, the two onboard comedians performed a short bit of their routine. At least 200 people came out for the show, and the audience was enthusiastic and supportive. The ship's age is starting to show, with a few nicks and marks here and there and visible rust spots on the exterior.

Colors are subtle, and the palette throughout -- from the main dining rooms to the corridors and cabins -- is distinctly muted. Certain areas -- the corridor on Deck 5 with Fahrenheit 555, the Piano Bar, Ocean Plaza and the main dining rooms -- could actually do with more decor, as they're so featureless. The 1996-built/2013-reconstructed Carnival Sunshine cruise ship was initially named "Carnival Destiny".

Carnival Destiny's Inaugural Cruise started on November 24, 1996. Sunshine's Inaugural Cruise started on April 12, 2013 (14-day Mediterranean Venice-Barcelona). Carnival Sunshine is one of the most active Carnival Cruise ships, featuring plenty of bars and restaurants, entertainment areas, and a stellar design throughout the ship. If you’re looking for things to do on Carnival Sunshine, just keep reading and see what we’ve got waiting for you. Carnival’s kid’s programming includes Camp Ocean, for children ages 2 to 11; the Circle C Lounge, for ages 12 to 14; and Club O2, for teenagers, up to 17.

If you pay for a plan prior to sailing, you'll receive a discount. You can adjust the amount at the Guest Services desk before disembarking if you are not satisfied with the service you received. Additionally, an 18% gratuity is added to bar bills and the cover charge of the Chef's Table. Carnival adds an automatic service gratuity of $14.50 to $16.50 per person, per day to final bills, depending on the cabin category. At the time of publication, prices started from $374 per person for a four-night Bahamas sailing in an inside cabin (excluding taxes and fees). You can also buy Thermal Suite passes for a day or the entire length of your cruise.

Carnival Sunshine Staterooms

A Carnival Sunshine Interior Upper/Lower stateroom creatively maximizes space for a pair of cruisers. These staterooms feature all the same amenities as other Interior staterooms, with a different layout — including one Twin bed, and either an upper Pullman or sofa bed. They also feature linens from the Carnival Comfort Collection, a full private bathroom and more.

However, when Carnival Destiny was rebranded as Carnival Sunshine in 2013, it took over as the lead ship for the new Sunshine class. Sister ships include similarly refurbished and renamed ships, the current Carnival Radiance and Carnival Sunrise. However, the Carnival Sunshine ship hasn’t always been Carnival Sunshine. Instead, the cruise ship launched in 1996 as Carnival Destiny.

It desperately needed a good scrub to get rid of the dark spots and paint drippings. The Sunshine ship's interior design was done by Partner Design (Hamburg-based company). The new ship now features modern amenities, new venues, more dining options, new onboard entertainment program (3 new grand show productions). Starting May 2019, the ship's new itinerary program offers 4- (to Nassau) and 5-day (Nassau and Half Moon Cay) short Bahamas cruises leaving roundtrip from a new homeport (Charleston SC) on a year-round schedule.

Carnival Sunshine's Porthole staterooms give you the classic seafarer's view times two - a pair of round windows providing an affordable view of the ocean. If you tire of ocean-gazing, there's plenty more to do onboard, but 24-hour room service is one amenity you can enjoy as you continue to take in the view. Night time isn't the only time to see stars on your cruise. Day or night, find a spot on deck and check out the huge poolside screen — it's Carnival Seaside Theater™! Guide to Cruise Passport Policies for U S. Travelers

do you need a passport for a caribbean cruise

You should have at least one blank page for each country you’re visiting. If you don’t have enough pages left for stamps, you’ll need to renew your passport before your trip. For closed-loop cruises (starting and ending at the same U.S. port), a passport isn’t required to re-enter the U.S. However, a passport might still be needed depending on the cruise’s other stops and the cruise line’s requirements. Check with the embassy or consular offices of the destination countries for more information.

Those taking a cruise around the Caribbean might find gathering the required documentation easier than they think. Regardless of what the minimum requirements are for travel, we highly recommend everyone get a passport. Passports do have an additional cost to them (especially for children), but we feel the advantages of having a passport far outweigh the cost and work required to get one. If you live in the U.S., you will also need the original copy of your Alien Registration Card (ARC or "Green Card") and any other documentation the countries on your itinerary require due to your alien status. On closed-loop cruises, a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID are all that's required. Another thing you’ll want to check is the amount of blank pages in your passport.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a seven-day Hawaii inter-island cruise that boards in Honolulu and visits Maui, Hilo and Kona on the Big Island, and Kauai before returning to Honolulu. If your passport has been gathering dust for the last two years, it may be expired. Not necessarily — here’s what you need to know about taking a cruise without a passport.

Traveling with a passport cover is also wise since it helps to keep your passport in pristine condition. The cruise line operates in over 100 countries across all 7 continents, with voyages ranging from 2 to 15 nights. A valid U.S. passport book is mandatory even if you’re flying to or from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean from the United States. If you’re an adult traveling with a minor (under 16 years old)—by land, air, or sea—you must be able to prove that you are the parent or legal guardian of the child. Otherwise, you must present and carry a notarized minor travel consent form that has been signed by the minor’s parents or legal guardians. Cruise line policies vary, but generally, children (under 18 years old) must be accompanied by an approved adult (21 years or older) within the same travel group. To verify age requirements and rules for minors, check the age policies of the cruise line you are traveling with. Carnival Cruise Line, often hailed as “America’s Cruise Line,” is a leading figure in the world of cruising.

A one-way cruise that boards in a U.S. port and disembarks in a different U.S. port does not qualify. While you may leave and enter the United States on a closed-loop cruise with the required identification and proof of citizenship, you should be aware that some countries on your itinerary may require a passport. (Your cruise line should provide that information when you book your trip.) It’s still a good idea to bring your passport on a cruise if it’s up to date, but if it’s not, we’ve got you covered. Here are eight destinations that you can cruise to without a passport (and don’t forget to renew your passport so you’ll always be ready to travel). Even though passports aren’t currently required for U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line strongly recommends traveling with a valid passport book. This is because a passport book is the most reliable form of identification.

No matter what type of fishing you choose, you’ll enjoy the pristine backdrop of Alaska’s rugged and untamed wilderness. The bridge takes about one hour to drive on the Klondike Highway, so most cruise passengers will visit by booking a tour excursion. These guided excursions are filled with other stops and offer plenty of opportunities to see Alaska’s iconic wildlife.

Save time and view the mountains, glaciers, fjords, and forests from above. For those with limited time or looking to explore further afield, shuttle services and taxis are available from the cruise port. As we will explore in greater detail, many cruise lines also partner with local excursion providers, including transportation to and from the port. While the cruise port is relatively small, it has several docks capable of handling full-sized cruise ships. Most cruise ships dock at the Broadway Dock, located at Broadway Street’s very edge. Two other docks are also used for cruise ships – Railroad Dock and Ore Dock, located at the southern edge of town at the end of Main Street.

The only big ship line with the fly-in option is Norwegian Cruise Line’s 2,186-passenger Pride of America, which is U.S.-flagged, a requirement for operating to and from a U.S. port without stopping in another country. (Foreign-flagged lines are not allowed to sail between U.S. ports without visiting another country under the Jones Act.) You can do a week on the ship from Honolulu and visit five Hawaiian Islands. However, when looking at small ships and larger ships on more expansive routes, keep in mind some islands—including Martinique, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and St. Bart’s—do require a passport. Closed-loop cruises from New York City, Boston, Baltimore, and Port Canaveral from lines such as MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean head to the famous pink-sand beaches and golf courses of Bermuda.

It's accepted as legal identification, negates the need to bring multiple forms of ID and provides peace of mind if the worst should happen — such as flying home unexpectedly or docking elsewhere during your trip. While the answer is no in many cases, it's a good idea to bring it along, just in case. However, it doesn't hurt to apply for one if you don't have one yet and have the time and funds. In order to sail, a guest must meet the requirements of ONE of the check boxes below. If you’re applying for your first passport, the cost is $145 – $110 for the passport and $35 for fees. Events can occur during your cruise that prevent you from returning to the U.S. on your cruise ship.

Therefore, even if a cruise doesn’t require a passport, it’s advisable to have one to avoid these potential issues. International cruises are a wonderful getaway for families and groups of friends. Many cruises have such a wide array of activities and experiences—not to mention unforgettable destinations—that there’s always something for everyone in your party to enjoy. Taking a cruise abroad is an unforgettable experience and an amazing way to see the world. To help you better prepare for your voyage, here are a few passport tips and best practices to follow when planning your international cruise. Please note that these requirements can change, so it’s always a good idea to check the latest information on the Norwegian Cruise Line’s website before your trip.

You might be surprised to know that certain U.S.-based cruises allow you to cruise without a passport. But just because some cruise passport requirements allow for “no passport cruises” doesn't mean you should sail without one.

When they arrived at the airport, they opened an envelope to learn they were headed to New Orleans. People also ask if they can just get by with a birth certificate and photo ID.  This article will attempt to answer these questions but keep in mind that the rules and regulations of travel are always in flux. However, you may need a passport to set foot on some of the Caribbean islands. Your cruise ship agency should be able to tell you whether this is the case. What if something happens to the ship or to someone in your party and you have to fly home?
