Robberies were down 8%, arsons were flat and aggravated assaults saw a 3% increase from 2022. That includes a 7% increase in the number of shootings, with CMPD reporting 4,261 shootings in 2023.

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson and Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead offered their condolences and law enforcement resources to the U.S. Marshal Services, the NC Department of Correction and city leaders in Charlotte. In addition to calling on lawmakers to provide more funding for law enforcement, he called on members of congress to pass a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
